Philosophy of Teaching
Purpose of Teaching:
I want to become a teacher for many reasons. I think teaching is about the students and that they should be the priority. I want to pour my heart and soul into creating a safe classroom environment for students. I want my students to feel safe, respected, and valued in my classroom by me and by other students. I want my students to know that I am always there for them if they need anything. There will be no failing in my classroom, instead I will encourage my students to keep trying until they succeed. I believe students are the future and that it is my job to prepare my students to the best of my ability. I want my students to be excited to learn and come to school ready to share in the new discoveries of the day alongside their classmates. I want to be a good role model for my students and to always support them the best I can.
Relationship with Students:
I want my classroom to have mutual respect. I will respect my students, I hope they will respect me, and they should also respect their classmates. This mutual respect will allow for a safe learning environment where failure is encouraged and not looked down upon. I want the students to come up with their own expectations for the class and to hold themselves accountable to these expectations. I want students to be able to work together to achieve a common goal, as well as working independently on certain assignments. I want to have open and honest communication with the parents to benefit the students, and to find the best ways to help the students learn and succeed.
Understanding of Teaching and Learning:
In my classroom, I want to optimize student-based learning. I want the students to solve problems on their own and to make their own discoveries. I understand that students need multiple ways to absorb information and I plan on adjusting the lessons to fit these needs. I want to utilize integrated lessons to show the connections between subjects and to enhance the learning opportunities for my students. I also hope to show how the content can be applied to real-life, making student learning beneficial and applicable. I want my students to not be afraid to make mistakes, but to realize you can learn from these mistakes. I want my students to reflect often over what they have learned and how it has affected them. I want my students to know I will fight for them and that I will always believe in them.
Classroom Environment:
I want my classroom to be a fun and safe space for students to learn. My classroom will be organized and neat but also fun and inviting. I want my students to feel they are escaping reality and jumping into a whole new world of discovery and learning. I will utilize brain breaks throughout the day. I will have class meetings and have the students elect class officers to address any issues that arise. I want students to understand the expectations of the classroom and to know the consequences if they do not follow the rules. If a student is acting out or behaving differently than normal, I will talk to them privately, instead of calling them out in front of the class. My goal is to show respect to all my students, not to use public humiliation to force them to behave. I want to create a team mindset in the students instead of a competitive mindset. I will be consistent in dealing with discipline and rewards.
Motivation:
I want to create a fun way for students to learn that is exciting for them. I will give students choices. I want to incorporate “Genius Hour” for students to learn more about topics that interest them. I will pay attention to the interests and hobbies of my students and to find ways to incorporate that into lessons if possible. I want students to set their own goals and to find ways to achieve these goals. I will look up to other good teachers for advice and ideas to use in my classroom. I want to be enthusiastic and excited about the lessons so that in return my students will feel these emotions as well. I want to use service learning to give the students an opportunity to experience life lessons out in the real world and to make a difference in their communities.
Assessment:
To assess my students, I want to give them a choice to show their understanding of the material, as all students learn differently. I want to use project-based assessments that tie in more than one idea. I want to use discussion to see if students are on the right track during the lessons. I will get to know my students so that I can find ways to help them express their knowledge and strengths. I will pledge to help my students understand and to not give up on them. I will have journals where students can reflect on their progress and learning along the way.
Personal Growth:
I want to learn something new every day. I will be open to being corrected by students when I make mistakes. I want to learn from my students and to demonstrate that learning does not stop once you leave school for the day or once you graduate. I want to challenge myself by changing up my lessons plans at least once every couple of years. I want to find new ways to approach topics. I want to learn from other teachers and I always want to better myself.
